Judith DeLozier on The Millennium Project
The NLP Millennium Project is important to me because ultimately an active NLP community defines what application areas are addressed and developed. That community decides where the focus of attention is placed for enhancing and developing our shared field of knowledge for the future. Through a sense of pride in our accomplishments, participation in our communities, and creating positive affiliations we can make this project a defining moment for all people in NLP regardless of their level of knowledge. Honoring every perspective as important feedback into the community.
This is an opportunity to use that feedback to develop new application areas as a team, create programs for those areas, and develop strategies for implementing them in the world. This is a chance to redefine our field with respect to the advances in technology. We can learn from each other how we can best affiliate on joint projects. We can model people in the field who are using NLP in bringing projects at the social level into reality. This is a time to be proactive and begin preparing the next generation of NLP Practitioners to make their contributions in research and development in the field. We have moved from the dreaming phase of the Community Leadership Project to the realist phase of creating the strategies for implementation.
I want to grow old and continue to see NLP developing and addressing the areas where it can do the most good. I believe this is the social area. I want the NLP community to have passion and take ownership of the direction of NLP out of vision and not out of fear.
