NLP and the Internet,
Putting the Means to an End
Question: For about 15 USD/month you can operate a web site and have an e-mail account. Given that this low cost communication resource exists, how can we use it for the NLP community at large so that the community benefits from it?
Vision for NLP (in 2003 ?)
NLP behaves like a scientific community
- peer review
- open publications (scientific nature)
- open organizations (independent of where trained)
- open conferences (with people presenting results of modeling projects)
Personal Mission Statement
To collect and distribute knowledge
Applied to NLP
- serve as an enabler to pass around knowledge in the community (internet, ...)
- serve as a free-lance trainer to pass NLP knowledge to NLP students
Metaphors for the Internet
- writing letters = e-mail
- publishing (books, articles, advertisement) = WWW
- speaking to an audience / having a discussion: mailing list, newsgroup
Difference -> no need to meet!
Possible Applications
Communication
Information
- Database of modules that can be used to reach the general public
- Case Databases:
- cases about NLP success for medical doctors
- cases about the mind/body split
- Model collections
About web sites
Challenge I: get visitors to your site
more than publicity: also interesting and changing content!
links from other web sites
always refer to your web site
Challenge II: reach TOTE for your web site
e.g. if your goal is to make money directly from your site, make sure people can reach you (e-mail, forms), offer products for on-line ordering
Description of my site
Goal: be a general, independent resource about NLP
3 main sections:
international trainer's list (> 250 institutes)
book resource (> 90 NLP book reviews)
FAQ: frequently asked questions
About Mailing Lists
What: computer automatically distributing a mail to all members of the list
closed community / some moderation
Examples
- NLPTALK: an open café for anyone interested in NLP
- TRAINNLP: a closed list for anyone having NLP knowledge up to trainer's level.
